🌳 Introducing “Tree of Thoughts”: In the buzzing café of Machine Learning development, a new blend is brewing. It’s called the “Tree of Thoughts”, a decoding technique for large language models (LLMs) that’s stirring up the AI community. This technique, like a barista crafting the perfect cup of coffee, involves an explicit tree search over the model’s outputs, creating a rich and robust solution to complex problems. It’s like a coffee tree branching out, exploring multiple paths of reasoning and making global choices by evaluating and selecting the best thought candidates.
🧠 Extension of Chain-of-Thought: The “Tree of Thoughts” is an evolution of the Chain-of-Thought prompting technique, much like how a coffee tree evolves from a seedling to a mature plant bearing coffee cherries. It allows for branching off and backtracking in the language model’s thought process, providing a structured approach to problem-solving that’s as satisfying as sipping a well-brewed cup of coffee. This technique has shown a 10x improvement over Chain of Thought prompting and a 900% improvement over base-level prompting in solving complex reasoning tasks.
🔍 Benefits of the Approach: The Tree of Thoughts technique is particularly effective for tasks that benefit from an investigative approach, similar to a coffee connoisseur exploring the nuances of different coffee beans. It draws inspiration from how humans solve problems, resembling a tree-like structure with nodes representing halfway solutions and branches representing possible actions. The breadth and depth of the ToT approach, along with its ability to look forward, backtrack, and save information, contribute to its superior problem-solving capabilities.
🌟 Impact of Chain of Thought Prompting: Chain of Thought prompting instructs the model to generate intermediate steps or thoughts during problem-solving, leading to improved problem-solving compared to just asking for the final answer. However, the ToT technique takes this a step further, much like a master barista refining their brewing technique to extract the best flavors from the coffee beans.
🔄 Combining Techniques for Improved Performance: The paper suggests combining Chain of Thought with voting to generate multiple thoughts and select the best one, resulting in better problem-solving performance. The ToT approach takes this to another level, much like blending different coffee beans to create a unique flavor profile.
🌳 Extension into Tree of Thoughts: Tree of Thoughts extends the concept of Chain of Thought by generating multiple thoughts at each step, evaluating their quality, and using tree search with pruning to explore promising paths. It’s like a barista experimenting with different brewing methods to find the perfect cup.
🎯 Evaluation and Results: The paper evaluates Tree of Thoughts on tasks like solving mathematical puzzles, creative writing, and crossword puzzles, where the technique shows improved performance compared to baselines, much like how a carefully brewed cup of coffee stands out from an instant mix. ToT enhances coherence in creative writing tasks and performs exceptionally well in challenging search problems, such as mini crosswords.
💡 Need for Further Research: Despite the promising results, the authors acknowledge the need for further research to make the approach more generic and less reliant on explicit prompts. It’s like striving to brew a more universally appealing cup of coffee that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of their coffee preferences. While ToT improves interpretability and aligns LLM decisions with human understanding, it also raises concerns about potential misuse or unintended consequences in future applications, much like the careful consideration needed when introducing a new coffee blend to the market.
👩💻 Open-Source Efforts: Just as coffee enthusiasts share their brewing techniques, ongoing open-source efforts aim to reduce the resource requirements and costs associated with implementing the ToT technique in LLMs. This collaborative approach could lead to more accessible and efficient use of this promising technique, much like a shared coffee recipe bringing joy to more coffee lovers.

For example, Zapier, an online automation tool, allows users to automate parts of their business by connecting various apps.
The Crème 🍮 | God Mode: The AI Barista Serving Up Tasks on Autopilot
🔗 Source: God Mode
🫘 Summary Beans
God Mode, an AI tool, is like having a personal barista that not only serves you your coffee but also takes care of your to-do list. It's an upgraded version of ChatGPT, designed to work on full autopilot, completing tasks, assigning tasks for itself, searching the web, and even outputting entire text documents complete with research. It can create schedules and to-do lists, and it's as if it's brewing up a perfect blend of productivity and efficiency.
A few months ago, I had a taste of this when I used Auto GPT to execute local shell commands in my VSCode terminal. It was like having a barista that not only brewed my coffee but also served it exactly how I liked it. I trained Auto GPT that first week of the Github drop, creating my own version called "Altair V1", to research, strategize, architect, design, code, compile, test, debug, and deploy the tools I always wanted to use, all on autopilot. I'll never forget the moment when it executed a command that created new files with working Python code, all on its own. It was like watching a barista craft the perfect cup of coffee, from grinding the beans to pouring the final product.
However, Auto GPT had its fair share of issues, and while they've made improvements and now it's containerized with Docker, I didn't have as much success with it as I did using ChatGPT plugins which I’ll dive into in future issues. Now, God Mode GPT is something I'm just now hearing about, and it's just as new to me as it is to you all. I'm excited to use it after I publish this article, and I can't wait to see what kind of productivity blend it brews up for everyone.
☕️ Opportunity Extract
💡 AI Task Automation: God Mode's ability to work on full autopilot and complete tasks highlights the potential of AI in task automation. Just as a barista uses a coffee machine to automate the brewing process, businesses and individuals could consider using AI to automate repetitive tasks. This could involve developing AI models that can automate tasks based on user prompts, or creating tools that can assist users in managing their tasks. For instance, imagine creating a tool that automates content creation for social media platforms. The tool could take a user prompt, such as "Create a week's worth of Instagram posts about coffee," and generate engaging posts, complete with captions and hashtags, all on autopilot.
🚀 AI Task Management: God Mode's ability to create schedules and to-do lists presents opportunities for businesses and individuals to develop their own AI-powered task management tools. This could involve creating AI models that can generate schedules or to-do lists based on user prompts, or developing tools that can assist users in managing their tasks. Consider, for example, an AI-powered project management tool that not only creates and manages tasks but also predicts potential roadblocks and suggests solutions. It could take a project brief, break it down into tasks, assign those tasks to team members based on their skills and workload, and even adjust the schedule as needed.
💼 AI User Approval: The feature of God Mode that asks users to approve each step it takes highlights the potential of AI solutions that incorporate user approval mechanisms. This could involve developing AI models that can adapt to user feedback, or creating tools that can integrate user approval mechanisms within AI-powered solutions. Imagine an AI-powered customer service tool that generates responses to customer inquiries but allows a human agent to approve or edit the response before it's sent. This could ensure that the responses are accurate and appropriate while still significantly reducing the time and effort required from the human agent.
